Course Description

The purpose of this course is to strengthen the knowledge, skills, and awareness of NDIS workers and staff in safeguarding children and young people. Safeguarding goes beyond simply responding to incidents, it is about proactively creating safe, supportive, and empowering environments where children’s rights, dignity, and wellbeing are protected at all times.

This training ensures that staff understand both their individual and organisational responsibilities under the NDIS Practice Standards, the Code of Conduct, and relevant state and federal child protection laws. Learners will develop the confidence to recognise risks, act appropriately, and follow the correct procedures when concerns arise.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this session, learners will be able to:

  1. Define safeguarding and child protection: Learners will distinguish between safeguarding as a proactive, preventative responsibility and child protection as statutory intervention when harm occurs.
  2. Identify risks and vulnerabilities in service delivery: Participants will learn how to recognise signs of neglect, abuse, or unsafe practices, and understand the risk factors that may affect children and young people with disabilities.
  3. Apply reporting and response procedures correctly: Staff will gain the knowledge to escalate concerns through the correct organisational and legal pathways, ensuring compliance and timely action.
  4. Align practice with legal and policy requirements: Learners will connect safeguarding responsibilities with the NDIS Practice Standards, Code of Conduct, and Australian child safety legislation.
  5. Build a culture of safety and accountability:  By embedding safeguarding into everyday practice, staff will contribute to an organisational culture that prioritises transparency, accountability, and the wellbeing of children and young people.
