Course Description

The purpose of this course is to build awareness, respect, and practical skills for delivering culturally safe and equitable care. Cultural safety goes beyond cultural awareness, requiring workers to reflect on their own values and biases while recognising and respecting the identity of participants. With a specific focus on First Nations Australians, this course highlights the historical and social context of colonisation, systemic disadvantage, and health inequities, and explains how these influence service delivery today. Learners will develop the confidence to provide culturally responsive support that upholds the dignity, rights, and choices of participants while aligning with NDIS Practice Standards and Aged Care Quality Standards.

Course Outcomes

On successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define cultural safety and explain its importance in health, disability, and aged care contexts.
  2. Recognise the impact of colonisation, intergenerational trauma, and systemic barriers on First Nations Australians.
  3. Apply culturally safe communication and engagement strategies in service delivery.
  4. Demonstrate respect for diversity and adapt services to meet cultural needs of participants.
  5. Identify strategies for reducing health inequities and promoting equity in healthcare and support.
  6. Reflect on their own cultural values and biases and commit to continuous cultural competence.
