Course Description

The purpose of this course is to equip support workers with a strong foundation in leadership skills that are relevant to the disability and aged care sector. Leadership in these environments is not only about supervising staff but also about creating a safe, respectful, and accountable workplace where participants’ needs are at the centre of all decisions. This course provides learners with knowledge of leadership principles, different leadership styles, compliance requirements, and practical strategies for guiding and motivating teams. It is designed to help workers transition into leadership roles or strengthen their informal leadership practice in day-to-day support work. By the end of the course, participants will understand how leadership links directly to participant safety, team cohesion, and compliance with NDIS Practice Standards.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define leadership and explain why it is important in disability and aged care environments.
  2. Identify and apply different leadership styles in everyday workplace scenarios.
  3. Recognise risks associated with poor leadership and describe how effective leadership supports compliance with NDIS Practice Standards.
  4. Demonstrate strategies for motivating and guiding colleagues, including informal leadership practices.
  5. Apply communication and problem-solving approaches to manage conflict and build team cohesion.
  6. Link leadership practice with participant safety, dignity, and rights under the NDIS Code of Conduct.
  7. Reflect on their own leadership behaviours and identify areas for professional growth.
