Course Description

The purpose of this course is to equip NDIS workers, disability support staff, and carers with the knowledge and confidence to safely support participants who have a tracheostomy. Tracheostomy care is a highly sensitive area of support that requires workers to understand the basic function of the tracheostomy, common risks, and safe procedures for everyday assistance.

This course is not designed to replace clinical nursing responsibilities, but rather to ensure support workers recognize their role, work within their scope of practice, and apply best practice infection control measures. By the end of the session, learners will appreciate the importance of vigilance, dignity, and compliance when assisting participants with tracheostomy support.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this training session, learners will be able to:

  1. Define tracheostomy and explain its purpose in disability and aged care contexts, including recognizing different tracheostomy types and their basic functions.
  2. Identify risks and hazards associated with tracheostomy care, including infection, obstruction, and accidental removal.
  3. Apply safe and compliant procedures for assisting with tracheostomy support, such as suction assistance, monitoring, and infection prevention practices.
  4. Align tracheostomy support with NDIS Practice Standards and organizational policies , ensuring accountability, safety, and participant dignity.
  5. Respond appropriately to incidents or emergencies , recognizing the limits of a support worker's role and escalating promptly to clinical staff when required.
