Course Description

The purpose of this course is to build knowledge, confidence, and skills for workers who provide support to participants from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities. In the NDIS context, workers often interact with participants who have unique cultural backgrounds, traditions, and values. By understanding these differences, support workers can avoid misunderstandings, reduce barriers, and deliver person-centred care. The course emphasises cultural awareness, sensitivity, and respect as essential foundations of quality support. It also reinforces compliance with NDIS Practice Standards and relevant Australian laws, ensuring that cultural inclusion is not only good practice but also a legal and ethical responsibility.

Course Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define and explain CALD concepts and diversity in Australia. Learners will understand what CALD means, why cultural diversity is significant in Australia, and how cultural identity influences participant needs.
  2. Identify risks of discrimination and exclusion. Learners will be able to recognise barriers faced by CALD participants, including language obstacles, unconscious bias, and systemic discrimination.
  3. Apply inclusive support strategies and communication practices. Learners will develop skills in using interpreters, adapting communication styles, and creating safe, respectful environments for participants.
  4. Align workplace practice with NDIS Practice Standards and Australian laws. Learners will be able to demonstrate compliance with legal and ethical frameworks, ensuring accountability and professional responsibility.
  5. Build inclusive organisational cultures that respect CALD communities. Learners will explore leadership and team-based strategies for embedding inclusivity across policies, procedures, and workplace culture.
