Course Description

The purpose of this course is to build a clear, practical understanding of restrictive practices as they apply within NDIS-funded disability services. Learners will explore the different types of restrictive practices, when and why they may be used, and the legal safeguards that protect participant rights.

The course provides the knowledge needed to ensure that all actions involving restrictive practices are lawful, ethical, person-centered, and compliant with the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Framework. Through applied learning and real workplace examples, participants will develop the skills to identify, minimize, and report restrictive practices in accordance with NDIS and organizational policies.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define and identify the five regulated restrictive practices under the NDIS framework, including seclusion, chemical restraint, mechanical restraint, physical restraint, and environmental restraint, and describe when each may apply.
  2. Understand the ethical, legal, and procedural obligations surrounding restrictive practices, including consent, authorization, documentation, and review under the NDIS (Restrictive Practices and Behavior Support) Rules 2018.
  3. Apply least restrictive alternatives and positive behavior support strategies to reduce or eliminate the need for restrictive practices while promoting participant choice, control, and independence.
  4. Recognizes the importance of consent, documentation, and reporting processes as part of compliance with organizational and legislative requirements, ensuring transparency and accountability.
  5. Maintain compliance with NDIS Practice Standards and protect participant rights by upholding the core principles of dignity, respect, and safeguarding in all service interactions.
