Course Description

The purpose of this course is to strengthen the capability of NDIS workers and behavior support practitioners in recognizing, recording, and reporting incidents that involve the use of restrictive practices. It aims to ensure every worker understands their obligations under the NDIS Commission's requirements, particularly those outlined in the NDIS (Incident Management and Reportable Incidents) Rules 2018.

Learners will develop the confidence to apply reporting procedures accurately and ethically, supporting participant safety, rights, and dignity at all times. This course promotes a compliance culture where accountability, transparency, and respect for human rights underpin all practices in disability support services.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify and classify reportable incidents in line with the NDIS (Incident Management and Reportable Incidents) Rules 2018, distinguishing between regulated and unregulated events.
  2. Recognise and interpret types of restrictive practices to determine when their use becomes a reportable incident, including unauthorised or emergency applications.
  3. Follow correct reporting procedures and timelines, ensuring prompt notification to supervisors, internal systems, and the NDIS Commission within required timeframes.
  4. Maintain accurate records and documentation to support compliance audits, quality improvement processes, and accountability in service delivery.
  5. Apply ethical and reflective decision-making when incidents occur, prioritising the participant’s safety, dignity, and rights while meeting all legislative and organisational expectations.
  6. Demonstrate understanding of the link between incident reporting and behaviour support, recognising how data from incidents can drive practice improvement and reduce the use of restrictive interventions over time.
