Course Description

The purpose of this course is to equip learners with the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to provide safe, compassionate, and compliant palliative and end-of-life care. This stage of care demands sensitivity, professionalism, and a strong understanding of both the participant’s individual needs and the broader ethical and regulatory frameworks. By completing this training, learners will gain the ability to recognise and respond to the unique physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual requirements of people approaching the end of life. The course also highlights the importance of communication, teamwork, and respect, ensuring participants are supported with dignity and their families are guided with empathy throughout the process.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this training session, learners will be able to:

  1. Define palliative and end-of-life care and its importance – Learners will gain clarity on the principles of care that prioritise comfort, dignity, and quality of life. They will understand the difference between curative and palliative approaches and why end-of-life care is central to compassionate practice.
  2. Identify risks, hazards, and challenges in these contexts – Learners will recognise the risks associated with unmanaged pain, emotional distress, infection, communication breakdowns, and cultural misunderstandings. They will also explore strategies to mitigate these challenges effectively.
  3. Apply safe, person-centred care procedures – Learners will be able to follow best practice approaches to symptom management, personal care, positioning, nutrition, and hygiene while maintaining respect for the individual’s wishes and needs.
  4. Communicate effectively with participants, families, and teams – Learners will develop skills to engage in sensitive conversations, provide reassurance, and collaborate effectively with healthcare professionals and families to create a consistent and supportive care environment.
  5. Align practices with NDIS Practice Standards and Australian care guidelines – Learners will ensure that their work meets compliance requirements, including ethical obligations, infection control principles, record-keeping, and respect for cultural diversity. This alignment not only protects participants but also safeguards organisations from compliance risks.
