Course Description

The purpose of this course is to equip learners with the knowledge, awareness, and practical skills required to assess and manage pain safely in disability and aged care environments. Pain is one of the most common and distressing symptoms faced by participants, yet it is frequently under-recognized or undertreated. Unmanaged pain can significantly reduce quality of life, increase risks of complications, and create compliance concerns under the NDIS Practice Standards and Aged Care Quality Standards.

This course provides a clear, evidence-based framework for identifying types of pain, recognizing associated risks, and applying both pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions. Learners will also explore workplace documentation, escalation procedures, and policy requirements to ensure safe, person-centered, and compliant care.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define pain and explain its importance in care contexts – understand the types, causes, and subjective nature of pain, and why accurate recognition is vital for quality of life.
  2. Identify risks and hazards linked to unmanaged pain – explore how untreated pain can affect physical, psychological, and social wellbeing, and increase compliance risks for organizations.
  3. Apply safe, effective pain management procedures – implement strategies such as observation, pain assessment tools, comfort measures, safe medication handling, and referral pathways.
  4. Align pain management with NDIS and Australian guidelines – integrate best practice with regulatory frameworks including the NDIS Practice Standards, Aged Care Quality Standards, and clinical care protocols.
