Course Description

The purpose of this course is to build the capability of workers in disability and aged care settings to recognise, respond to, and support participants experiencing mental health challenges. Mental health first aid is often the first line of support when a person is in distress, facing a crisis, or showing early warning signs of a condition.

This training emphasises immediate and appropriate responses that prioritise participant safety and dignity, while also protecting the wellbeing of the worker. It aligns with the NDIS Practice Standards and broader Australian mental health guidelines, ensuring that learners are not only skilled in responding effectively but also compliant with legal and ethical frameworks.

Course Outcomes

By completing this training session, learners will be able to:

  1. Define common mental health conditions relevant to disability care, including their characteristics and impacts on daily life.
  2. Identify early risks, warning signs, and potential crisis situations, ensuring timely and appropriate responses.
  3. Apply safe, person-centred first aid strategies that align with best practice and protect both participants and workers.
  4. Communicate effectively and professionally with participants, families, carers, and health professionals, ensuring collaborative and respectful support.
  5. Align practice with the NDIS Practice Standards, the NDIS Code of Conduct, and Australian mental health guidelines to maintain compliance and ethical responsibility.
