Course Description

The purpose of this course is to build the essential knowledge, practical understanding, and professional confidence required to assist clients safely and effectively with their medication needs. Learners will gain a clear understanding of the difference between assisting, prompting, and administering medication, and how these roles relate to their level of responsibility within community, disability, and aged care environments. This course aims to ensure that all workers providing medication support operate within Australian legal frameworks, workplace policies, and the NDIS Practice Standards. Emphasis is placed on infection prevention and control, risk management, documentation, and maintaining the rights, dignity, and independence of clients. By the end of the training, learners will understand how to carry out their duties safely, communicate effectively with clients and supervisors, and contribute to high standards of care and service delivery.

Course Outcomes

  • By the end of this training session, learners will be able to demonstrate knowledge, understanding, and workplace readiness in the following areas:

    1. Explain safe and legal medication assistance practices Learners will understand the scope of their role, apply the five rights of medication safety (right person, right medication, right dose, right route, and right time), and comply with all relevant state and territory regulations.
    2. Follow organisational procedures for medication support Learners will apply internal workplace policies, understand supervision and delegation requirements, and complete all tasks in accordance with care plans and medication charts.
    3. Identify and manage medication risks and incidents Learners will recognise potential errors, side effects, or allergic reactions, and follow correct reporting and escalation procedures to minimise harm and ensure client safety.
    4. Maintain accurate documentation and promote client independence Learners will accurately record medication activities, respect privacy and confidentiality, and encourage clients to participate actively in their own care, supporting their dignity and autonomy.
