Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide learners with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to manage psychotropic medications in disability support settings safely and ethically. Psychotropic medications can play a significant role in improving the quality of life for participants, but they also carry risks if not used or monitored correctly.

This training ensures that learners understand both the benefits and the challenges, while aligning their practice with legal and compliance requirements such as the NDIS Practice Standards and the Restrictive Practices Rules. By the end, learners will be better prepared to support participant wellbeing through safe, person-centred medication management.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define psychotropic medications and their role in disability care. Learners will be able to explain what psychotropic medications are, identify different types, and understand their intended therapeutic purposes within disability settings.
  2. Identify risks and ethical considerations in medication use. Learners will examine the side effects, dependency risks, and ethical challenges of psychotropic medication use, with particular focus on restrictive practices and human rights.
  3. Apply safe, person-centred medication management procedures. Learners will demonstrate how to support participants in a way that ensures safety, dignity, and choice while following correct medication handling and documentation processes.
  4. Align practice with NDIS Practice Standards, Restrictive Practices Rules, and Australian medication safety guidelines. Learners will be able to integrate legal, ethical, and compliance requirements into daily practice, ensuring their work meets both sector expectations and regulatory obligations.
