Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide NDIS and community care workers with the essential knowledge, skills, and strategies required to work safely and effectively when operating alone. Lone working in community and home-based care presents unique risks, including physical hazards, exposure to challenging behaviours, and the absence of immediate support in emergencies. This training equips workers to identify these risks, apply preventative strategies, and follow organisational protocols with confidence. By completing the course, learners will not only protect their own health and wellbeing but also ensure that participants receive safe, dignified, and compliant services in line with the NDIS Practice Standards and Work Health and Safety requirements.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Define lone worker safety in NDIS contexts Learners will clearly explain what lone worker safety means, why it is a priority in disability support, and how it is linked to broader WHS and compliance obligations.
  2. Recognise risks specific to community and home care environments Learners will identify hazards unique to lone working situations, such as unpredictable participant needs, home environments that are not set up for care delivery, and personal safety challenges.
  3. Apply risk management and emergency response procedures Learners will demonstrate how to use structured risk assessments, incident response steps, and communication protocols to remain safe and effective while working independently.
  4. Align practices with NDIS standards and organisational policies Learners will apply organisational requirements, codes of conduct, and NDIS Practice Standards to ensure consistency, compliance, and quality service delivery.
  5. Build a proactive culture of safety and accountability Learners will contribute to workplace safety by reporting hazards, engaging in debriefing and supervision, and encouraging a culture where lone worker risks are managed transparently and responsibly.
