Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide NDIS workers and care professionals with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to support people with autism in an inclusive and respectful manner. Autism is a spectrum condition that affects communication, social interaction, behaviour, and sensory processing in unique ways. Many individuals with autism face risks of misunderstanding, discrimination, and exclusion in community and care settings.

This course aims to address these barriers by equipping workers with evidence-based strategies that enhance participation, dignity, and choice. Through theory, practical examples, and workplace applications, learners will gain a clear understanding of inclusive practice and how it aligns with NDIS Practice Standards.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define autism and its key characteristics - Learners will describe autism as a spectrum condition and explain the common differences in communication, behaviour, and sensory processing.
  2. Recognise the risks of exclusion and discrimination - Learners will identify how stereotypes, misunderstandings, and organisational barriers affect people with autism and explore ways to reduce these risks.
  3. Apply inclusive communication and support strategies - Learners will demonstrate practical techniques such as using visual supports, adjusting environments, and adapting routines to promote participation.
  4. Align practice with NDIS standards and Australian guidelines - Learners will explain how inclusive practice meets compliance expectations under the NDIS Practice Standards and supports participant rights and wellbeing.
