Course Description

The purpose of this course is to build a clear and practical understanding of how gender and disability intersect in care and support services. Many participants experience multiple layers of identity that influence how they access support, express needs, and respond to care environments. When staff overlook gender factors, participants may feel unsafe, disrespected, or excluded, even when their disability needs are technically addressed.

This course equips learners with the knowledge to recognise these dynamics and respond appropriately. It aims to strengthen professional practice by promoting respect for individual identity, compliance with NDIS Practice Standards, and the creation of inclusive environments.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this training session, learners will be able to:

  1. Define gender and disability concepts in care contexts. Learners will gain clarity on how gender identity and disability are defined within Australian frameworks, including both medical and social models.
  2. Recognise risks of gendered bias and discrimination. Learners will explore how assumptions about gender can compound barriers faced by people with disabilities, leading to inequity or exclusion.
  3. Apply inclusive procedures and communication strategies. Learners will learn practical approaches to tailoring care plans, rostering, and communication to meet diverse participant needs respectfully.
  4. Align practice with NDIS standards and Australian guidelines. Learners will link their practice to compliance requirements such as the NDIS Practice Standards, the NDIS Code of Conduct, and broader anti-discrimination laws.
