The purpose of this course is to equip disability support workers with the essential knowledge and practical skills to ensure food is handled, prepared, and served safely in a variety of disability support settings. It supports compliance with the Australian Food Safety Standards, the NDIS Practice Standards, and relevant workplace health and safety policies. Learners will explore the causes and prevention of food-borne illness, contamination control, temperature management, personal hygiene, and cleaning practices. The course also focuses on ethical and legal responsibilities when assisting participants with meals, ensuring that all food-related activities promote health, dignity, and participant choice.
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
1. Identify the key principles of food safety and contamination prevention
2. Apply safe food handling practices to reduce health risks for people with disability
3. Maintain hygiene, cleaning, and temperature control in accordance with legal and organisational requirements
4. Recognise and report food safety incidents or hazards appropriately
5. Demonstrate compliance with NDIS and Food Safety Code standards in everyday work
