Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide learners with the skills and knowledge required to empower people with disability and aged care participants to make their own choices and maintain independence. Under the NDIS and Australian human rights frameworks, every individual has the right to self-determination, dignity, and control over their lives. This course helps workers understand these principles and apply them in daily practice. It also provides practical tools to balance the duty of care with dignity of risk, ensuring participants can live fulfilling lives while remaining safe and supported.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Define the concepts of choice, independence, autonomy, and dignity of risk.
  • Identify risks and responsibilities associated with promoting participant choice in care settings.
  • Apply practical procedures and communication strategies to support informed decision-making.
  • Balance duty of care obligations with respect for participant autonomy.
  • Align their daily work practices with the NDIS Practice Standards, the NDIS Code of Conduct, and broader Australian guidelines on disability rights and quality care.
  • Demonstrate confidence in using person-centred strategies that empower participants to direct their own lives and achieve their goals.
