Course Description

The purpose of this course is to equip NDIS and community workers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to respond effectively in emergency first aid situations. In disability and aged care environments, emergencies can happen at any time, such as falls, seizures, choking, or sudden illness. Staff need to be prepared to act quickly, safely, and in a manner consistent with both NDIS Practice Standards and Australian first aid guidelines.

This training focuses on building confidence through clear explanations, practical examples, and compliance-aligned practices. By the end of the course, workers will understand their role in preserving life, preventing further harm, and ensuring dignity for participants while awaiting professional medical support.

Disclaimer: This course provides basic emergency first aid knowledge for general awareness and educational purposes only. It is not a Nationally Recognised First Aid Certificate and does not meet the requirements for workplace first aid compliance under Australian standards. Participants should seek formal first aid training from a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) if a certified qualification is required.

Course Outcomes

By completing this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define emergency first aid and explain its relevance in NDIS contexts. Learners will clearly articulate what constitutes first aid, distinguish between everyday care tasks and emergency interventions, and understand why immediate response is critical in disability and aged care environments.
  2. Identify risks, hazards, and common emergencies. Learners will recognise common emergencies such as choking, falls, seizures, and cardiac arrest, and link these to specific risks faced by NDIS participants. This prepares them to anticipate and reduce hazards in their daily work.
  3. Apply safe, compliant first aid procedures. Learners will practise responding to scenarios using recognised first aid steps, including calling for help, administering CPR, and managing injuries, all while ensuring safety and compliance with policies.
  4. Align practice with NDIS and Australian standards. Learners will link their first aid actions to NDIS Practice Standards, the NDIS Code of Conduct, and Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines, ensuring they meet both legal and professional obligations.
