Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide learners with the knowledge and skills required to balance two critical principles in disability and aged care: Duty of Care and Dignity of Risk. These concepts are at the core of ethical, legal, and person-centred practice under the NDIS Practice Standards.

By completing this training, learners will understand their responsibilities to protect participants from foreseeable harm, while also supporting their right to make informed choices and take risks that are meaningful to their lives. The course ensures workers are equipped to act lawfully, ethically, and respectfully in diverse and sometimes complex care situations.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define Duty of Care and Dignity of Risk – clearly explain the meaning, scope, and application of each concept within the NDIS and aged care frameworks.
  2. Identify risks and hazards – recognise common situations where safety and autonomy intersect, and assess when intervention is required.
  3. Apply person-centred strategies – balance protection from harm with respect for participants’ rights to make choices, even where risk is present.
  4. Use policies and procedures – align practice with organisational guidelines, NDIS Practice Standards, and Australian legal requirements.
  5. Demonstrate accountability – document actions, escalate concerns appropriately, and communicate effectively with participants, families, and supervisors.
