Course Description

The purpose of this course is to equip NDIS workers, aged care staff, and disability support professionals with essential knowledge and skills to provide safe, compassionate, and compliant dementia care. Dementia is a progressive condition that affects cognitive, emotional, and physical wellbeing. Without proper training, workers may inadvertently compromise participant safety, dignity, or rights.

This course builds understanding of dementia’s nature, associated risks, and evidence-based support procedures. It also ensures alignment with NDIS Practice Standards, Australian dementia guidelines, and WHS obligations. Learners will gain confidence in their ability to respond to challenging behaviours, communicate effectively, and foster environments that protect dignity and independence.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

Define dementia and describe its key types within the Australian care context, distinguishing it from normal ageing.
Identify risks and challenges associated with dementia care, including behavioural, emotional, and environmental factors.
Apply safe and effective care procedures, including communication techniques, behavioural support, and dignity-focused strategies.
Recognise compliance requirements under the NDIS Practice Standards, WHS legislation, and relevant Australian dementia care guidelines.
Promote participant rights and wellbeing by fostering respectful, person-centred care that supports independence and quality of life.
