Course Description

The primary purpose of this course is to give NDIS support workers and related staff the ability to create and maintain safe, supportive, and compliant home environments for participants. A safe home is not only free from immediate hazards but also promotes independence, dignity, and wellbeing. This training will help workers develop practical skills in hazard identification, safe equipment use, emergency planning, and applying compliance frameworks.

By completing the course, workers will be able to balance participant choice and control with their duty of care, ensuring services meet the expectations of NDIS Practice Standards and community safety requirements.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define safe home environments in NDIS contexts – Articulate what a safe, accessible, and participant-centred home looks like, and how this aligns with NDIS values.
  2. Identify risks and hazards in participant homes – Recognise both obvious and hidden risks in the home environment, such as trip hazards, unsafe furniture, poor infection control practices, or inadequate emergency planning.
  3. Apply procedures for reducing risks and ensuring compliance – Implement safe practices for handling equipment, managing emergencies, and supporting daily activities in a way that reduces harm.
  4. Align with NDIS Practice Standards and organisational protocols – Demonstrate knowledge of compliance frameworks, policies, and reporting requirements that govern safe service delivery.
  5. Promote a culture of safety and accountability – Develop professional behaviours that encourage ongoing vigilance, open communication, and shared responsibility in maintaining safe home environments.
