Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide learners with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to support participants who experience bladder and bowel care needs in disability and aged care settings. Continence management is not only about hygiene and physical health but also about dignity, independence, and quality of life.

By completing this course, learners will be able to recognise different types of incontinence, apply safe procedures, minimise risks of infection, and support participants in a respectful and person-centred way. The course also ensures that learners understand and comply with the NDIS Practice Standards and relevant Australian health guidelines.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this training session, learners will be able to:

  1. Define continence and incontinence and explain their relevance in disability and aged care settings.
  2. Identify risks and hazards associated with incontinence, including infection, skin breakdown, and psychosocial impacts.
  3. Apply safe continence management procedures, including the use of aids, toileting plans, and infection control practices.
  4. Communicate effectively and respectfully with participants, families, and health professionals about continence needs.
  5. Align their practice with NDIS Practice Standards, Australian Guidelines for Infection Prevention and Control, and organisational policies to ensure compliance and best practice in care delivery.
