Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide NDIS and individual support workers with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to effectively communicate with participants who are non-verbal. It emphasises person-centred approaches, respect for individual communication preferences, and the use of practical strategies such as body language, gestures, assistive communication devices, and supported decision making. By completing this training, learners will understand how to recognise and respond to different forms of non-verbal communication, reduce risks of exclusion, and promote dignity, safety, and empowerment in all interactions.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Identify and explain key forms of non-verbal communication used by participants, including body language, gestures, and assistive technologies.
  2. Recognise the risks of misinterpretation and apply safe, respectful, and person-centred strategies in communication.
  3. Use procedures and policies that support effective interaction with non-verbal participants in line with NDIS Practice Standards.
  4. Apply practical communication techniques through role plays, case studies, and real workplace scenarios.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of compliance requirements, including NDIS Code of Conduct and relevant Australian standards, while supporting participant choice and dignity.
