Course Description

The purpose of this course is to provide NDIS and disability support workers with the knowledge and skills to understand, identify, and manage the use of chemical restraint in practice. Chemical restraint is one of the most regulated restrictive practices and carries significant ethical, legal, and health implications.

By the end of this training, learners will be able to distinguish between chemical restraint and appropriate medical treatment, recognise the risks and impacts of misuse, apply correct protocols, and comply with reporting requirements under the NDIS Practice Standards.

The ultimate goal is to protect the dignity, human rights, and safety of people with disability, while promoting positive behaviour support strategies and working towards the reduction and elimination of restrictive practices.

Course Outcomes

Define chemical restraint under the NDIS (Restrictive Practices and Behaviour Support) Rules 2018, and differentiate it from treatment for diagnosed conditions.

Recognise examples and non-examples of chemical restraint in workplace scenarios, including special considerations such as menstrual suppression and anti-libidinal medication.

Identify risks and impacts associated with chemical restraint, including physical, psychological, ethical, and legal consequences.

Apply correct procedures and protocols for documenting, monitoring, and reporting chemical restraint, in line with NDIS Commission requirements.

Collaborate with practitioners and families to develop positive behaviour support strategies and contribute to the reduction and elimination of chemical restraint.

Demonstrate practical skills through case study analysis and role play, applying decision-making tools to real-world support situations.
