Course Description

The purpose of this course is to equip NDIS workers, aged care staff, and disability support professionals with the knowledge and skills to promote participant advocacy and self-determination. It is designed to strengthen staff understanding of rights-based care and to ensure participants are given genuine opportunities to express preferences, make decisions, and access advocacy services where needed.

By completing this course, learners will gain the confidence to balance duty of care with the dignity of risk, supporting participants to live with autonomy, equality, and respect.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define advocacy and self-determination, explaining their importance in the NDIS context.
  2. Identify risks that may undermine participant autonomy and describe strategies to minimise them.
  3. Apply inclusive procedures that encourage participants to make choices about their supports.
  4. Align practice with NDIS Practice Standards, the Code of Conduct, and relevant Australian legislation.
  5. Demonstrate practical skills through case studies and role plays to support advocacy and decision-making in real-life workplace scenarios.
