Course Description

The purpose of this course is to equip disability support workers, aged care staff, and NDIS professionals with advanced knowledge and skills in infection control, specifically relating to resistant pathogens. Resistant pathogens, such as MRSA, VRE, and multidrug-resistant Gram-negative organisms, represent a growing challenge in both community and healthcare environments. This training ensures staff can recognise, prevent, and manage risks associated with resistant pathogens.

The course also reinforces compliance with NDIS Practice Standards, the NDIS Code of Conduct, and the Australian Guidelines for Infection Prevention and Control. Ultimately, the goal is to enhance participant safety, protect staff, and reduce organisational risk by promoting consistent, safe, and compliant infection control practices.

Course Outcomes

By the end of this training, learners will be able to:

Define resistant pathogens and their significance – Understand what resistant pathogens are, how they develop, and why they present a serious challenge in NDIS and aged care settings.
Identify risks and impacts – Recognise the health, workplace, and organisational risks posed by resistant pathogens, including consequences for participants, staff, and compliance.
Apply advanced infection control procedures – Implement safe, effective, and compliant practices, including both standard and transmission-based precautions, environmental cleaning, and outbreak response.
Align with policies and compliance standards – Demonstrate knowledge of infection control requirements within NDIS Practice Standards, organisational policies, and Australian health guidelines.
Translate learning into practice – Apply course content through case studies, role plays, and real-world workplace scenarios to build confidence and accountability in preventing and managing resistant pathogen risks.
